Rahul Roy explains his wedding performances

Roy, best known for his breakout role in the 1990 film Aashiqui, said he has continued performing at weddings because he has financial responsibilities and needs to earn.

“I have expenses, and I need the money,” Roy told The Times of India. “Getting work after my brain stroke in 2020 was difficult.”

He said he had spent much of the following years recovering and doing whatever work he could find to keep himself financially stable.

“Sometimes, I earn Rs 2 lakh or 4 lakh by dancing at weddings,” Roy said, adding that people who criticise the performances do not necessarily understand the work involved.

Videos of Roy dancing at a wedding and performing to his older songs had circulated on social media, prompting online discussion about why the actor was taking part in such events. Roy has previously defended the work, saying he was earning honestly while dealing with financial and legal obligations.

Roy says he is rebuilding his life and career

The actor said the years following his stroke effectively interrupted his career.

“The last five years have almost been like a break because I was recuperating. There was no work,” he said. Roy added that he is now receiving opportunities again and is grateful to those willing to work with him.

He also discussed an ongoing legal matter involving around Rs 30 lakh and said he is trying to settle it. Roy further said that he transferred his assets to his former wife during their divorce and is now working to rebuild his financial position.

Roy suffered a brain stroke in November 2020 while filming LAC — Live the Battle in Kargil. He was subsequently moved to Mumbai for treatment.

From Aashiqui to a new screen comeback

Roy became a major Bollywood star after Aashiqui, the 1990 musical directed by Mahesh Bhatt, in which he starred opposite Anu Aggarwal. He later moved into television and won the first season of Bigg Boss, which aired from 2006 into early 2007.

His recent work includes Kanu Behl’s Agra, which was released in 2025. Roy is also set to appear in the upcoming Kuku TV series Super Badshah, in which he will play an underworld don alongside Karanvir Bohra.

For Roy, the wedding performances appear to be one part of a broader effort to return to regular professional work after a prolonged period of recovery. His latest comments make clear that he views the performances not as a retreat from acting, but as a way of earning while rebuilding his career.
