Nana Patekar with wife Neelakanti and son MalharNana Patekar’s private family life included wife Neelakanti, son Malhar and a deeply personal family history.

MUMBAI, India — October 9, 2026 — Nana Patekar’s death has renewed interest in the private family life he largely kept away from the spotlight, from his wife and award-winning Marathi actress Neelakanti Patekar to their surviving son Malhar and the parents and brothers who shaped his early years.

Patekar died in Goa on October 8 at the age of 75 after being found unresponsive at his residence. His son Malhar confirmed the death. The actor was taken to Manipal Hospital, where doctors attempted CPR, and he was declared dead at 5:20 a.m. A post-mortem was ordered as part of a medico-legal procedure, with doctors initially identifying cardiac arrest but noting that the precise cause required medical examination.

Key points

  • Nana Patekar married Marathi actress Neelakanti Patekar in 1978, after the two met through theatre.
  • The couple had two sons, Durvasa and Malhar; Durvasa died at about two-and-a-half years old.
  • Malhar has worked in filmmaking, including behind-the-camera roles, and confirmed his father’s death.
  • Nana and Neelakanti remained legally married despite living separately for many years.
  • Nana’s own older interviews provide the clearest account of his parents and brothers, amid differing details in some newer family profiles.

Who is Nana Patekar’s wife Neelakanti?

Neelakanti Patekar was not simply known as Nana Patekar’s wife. She had an independent career in Marathi theatre and cinema.

The couple reportedly met through Marathi theatre and married in 1978. Neelakanti had studied Physics and, at her father’s urging, appeared for the IIT entrance examination. She cleared it but chose theatre instead. In 1973, she won a Gold Medal for Best Actress at the Maharashtra State Drama Competition. She later appeared opposite Sachin Pilgaonkar in Aatm Vishwas and received the Maharashtra government’s Best Actress award for her performance. Years later, she returned to the screen in Chhaava, playing Dharau.

Her marriage to Nana eventually took a different path. The two lived separately for decades but did not legally divorce. Nana had previously described their relationship as one in which they had shared years of happiness and supported each other before developing “irreconcilable differences” and growing apart.

Nana Patekar’s sons: Durvasa and Malhar

Nana and Neelakanti had two sons.

Their elder son, Durvasa, died when he was around two-and-a-half years old. The loss was one of the most painful episodes in the actor’s personal life and has been recalled in multiple accounts of his family history. Their younger son, Malhar, survived him.

Malhar has largely avoided the level of public attention that followed his father. He has nevertheless worked in the film industry, including as an assistant director on Ram Gopal Varma’s The Attacks of 26/11. He has also been associated with filmmaking and his father’s work outside mainstream cinema.

Malhar was also the family member who confirmed Nana’s death, placing him at the centre of the family’s public response following the actor’s passing.

What about Malhar Patekar’s wife?

Interest in Malhar’s personal life has risen sharply alongside searches for Nana Patekar’s family. However, reputable current reporting does not establish a wife for Malhar or provide a confirmed marriage announcement.

That distinction matters because numerous biography and social-media pages publish personal details about Malhar without the level of sourcing expected for a news report. Star Struck Times is therefore not treating online claims about a supposed wife as confirmed information.

Who were Nana Patekar’s parents?

Nana Patekar was born Vishwanath Patekar in Murud-Janjira in Maharashtra’s Raigad district.

In a 2003 interview with The Times of India, Nana said his father, Gajanand Patekar, was involved in the textile business and that he grew up in Murud with his brothers Ashok and Dilip while his father spent time in Mumbai. He identified his mother as Nirmala, a homemaker.

Nana also spoke in later interviews about his father’s influence on his early interest in theatre. His father enjoyed plays and tamasha and encouraged him to watch performances. Nana recalled initially believing that his father favoured his older brother, but said that changed after his father travelled from Mumbai to see him perform on stage.

The family also experienced financial hardship. Nana recalled that when he was a teenager, his father’s business collapsed after someone close to the family took away property, forcing him to start working while still in school. He later painted film posters to earn money.

Nana Patekar’s family was largely kept out of the spotlight

The contrast between Nana’s public career and private family life is striking. He became one of the most recognisable actors in Hindi and Marathi cinema, earning three National Film Awards and the Padma Shri, while his immediate family generally remained outside celebrity culture.

That privacy also explains why some family details circulating after his death are inconsistent. Recent reports have differed over the names and background of Nana’s parents, while his own older interview provides a first-person account that is more useful for establishing those details. Star Struck Times has relied on the better-documented version rather than presenting every circulating claim as fact.

For Nana Patekar, family was therefore a story largely lived away from cameras: a marriage that survived decades of separation, the devastating loss of a young son, a surviving son who pursued filmmaking rather than celebrity, and parents whose struggles formed part of the actor’s own account of how he found his way into theatre.
