Why Ryan Gosling Is Taking Over Ghost Rider
Marvel confirmed Gosling’s casting during its surprise appearance at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2026. The announcement introduced the actor as the latest big-screen Ghost Rider, a character recognised for his flaming skull, supernatural powers and motorcycle.
Gosling will work with director Shawn Levy, known for directing Deadpool & Wolverine. The two previously collaborated on Star Wars: Starfighter.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige also revealed that Gosling played an important role in bringing the project to life. Speaking to Empire, Feige explained that the actor developed the original idea and presented it alongside Levy.
“It was Gosling who had the vision,” Feige said.
He added that Gosling’s pitch convinced Levy to work on the project before the pair brought their proposal to Marvel.
The film is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on July 28, 2028. However, Marvel has not yet revealed the full storyline or detailed how the new film will connect with the character’s previous big-screen appearances.
Nicolas Cage’s History With Ghost Rider
Cage first played Johnny Blaze in Ghost Rider (2007), portraying a motorcycle stunt performer who makes a supernatural deal and becomes the Spirit of Vengeance.
He returned for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance in 2012. Both films were released before Marvel Studios established the character’s place in its current cinematic universe.
Gosling’s casting therefore marks a new chapter for the character, rather than a simple continuation of Cage’s earlier films.
Cage’s comments are particularly notable because they offer a public response from the actor most closely associated with Ghost Rider’s previous theatrical incarnation. His support, however, does not confirm an appearance or involvement in the upcoming Marvel production.
For now, audiences will have to wait to see how Gosling approaches the role and what direction Levy takes the supernatural superhero.
